Extremely Rare 1950s Lev Gleason Comic Cards Complete Set (15) Plus Advertising Card

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $420

Extremely rare complete set of fifteen comic cards produced by Lev Gleason Publications featuring characters from the various comic books published by the company. Lev Gleason published several of the 1940s and 1950s most popular comics, including Daredevil Comics, Crime Does Not Pay, and Boy Comics. Gleason opted to advertise his trading-card set in comic books with instructions on how to send away for cards; this was in stark contrast to the popular method of inserting cards into packs of gum or candy. Not surprisingly, it would appear as though children did not go through the effort of buying the comics and sending away for cards to build sets as very few complete sets have survived. (This is the first set we have ever handled in our more than forty years and only the second time we have ever seen any sizeable quantity of cards from this set offered at public auction.) Each card features a colorful illustration set against a brilliant yellow background and is printed on thin cardstock measuring approximately 2-5/8" x 3-3/8" inches. In the only other group of cards from this series that we have ever seen offered for sale, each featured a premium coupon attached to the bottom edge that was intended to be cut away. None of the fifteen cards offered here feature this coupon and it does not appear that a coupon was ever attached. Our consignor, who has researched this set extensively, tells us that sets were issued both ways (with and without coupons), but we have no way to independently verify whether or not this is accurate. Overall condition of this set is Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, with two Ex. All cards are bright, crisp, and clean, with just light touches of wear at the corners. Also included is the original advertising card produced by Lev Gleason Publications, which implores youngsters to collect all fifteen cards by buying and reading the company's five different comic titles. The card displays wear in the lower right corner and grades Vg-Ex. This is the only example of this advertising card we have ever seen. A tremendous opportunity to acquire this very rare and fascinating set, which would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced comic or nonsport-card collection. Total: 16 cards (complete set of 15 plus advertising card).
