1951 Topps Ringside Boxing Collection (5) Including Rocky Marciano
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $420
Collection of five different cards from the 1951 Topps Ringside boxing set, highlighted by a superb example of the key card, #32 Rocky Marciano. These cards were part of an original-owner collection consigned to this auction, and have literally remained untouched in a closet since 1951! The baseball, football, and hockey cards from this original-owner collection were substantial enough that they are being offered elsewhere in this auction. These were the only boxing cards in the collection. This collection consists of the following: #5 Cerdan (Ex+), 26 Miceli (Ex+), 27 Scalzo (Ex+), 32 Marciano (SGC EX/NM 80, submitted by REA), and 34 Ray Robinson (Vg-Ex+). Topps' first attempt at boxing cards was in 1951 with the 96-card "Ringside" boxing series. The exceptional artwork and the inclusion of boxing greats from all eras have always made this set one of boxing-card collecting's premier issues. Topps apparently found much greater success with baseball and football. This is confirmed both by the relative scarcity of "Ringside" cards (they are much rarer than Topps baseball and football cards issued in 1951), and the fact that this was the only Topps boxing set ever issued. The quality of production of this issue, however, is equal or superior to that of all early 1950s bubble-gum cards issued by Topps or Bowman. A small but desirable collection of five cards from this landmark issue! Total: 5 cards. SOLD FOR $420
