Circa 1930 Jack Dempsey Signed Publicity Photo
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $120
Vintage photo signed by the legendary "Manassa Mauler," Jack Dempsey. The photo captures Dempsey as he looked at the peak of his boxing career, circa 1920, and has been inscribed in black fountain pen "To Roy Smith/good luck Roy/Jack Dempsey." Both the inscription and signature are boldly scripted and grade "9/10." Like Babe Ruth and other top athletes of the era, Dempsey always had a large supply of publicity photos on hand to satisfy the many autograph requests he received. This is one such photo and it is accompanied by a portion of the original mailing envelope that includes both the name and address of the recipient, and Dempsey's return New York address. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays a few minor creases, a tiny edge tear, as well as surface paper residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. In Very Good to Excellent condition. The envelope portion is trimmed to its current dimensions (9.25 x 5.5 inches) and is mounted onto a black cardboard backing (Vg). LOA from James Spence/JSA.
