1950s Sports Illustration Art Paintings (7)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $240

Collection of seven original sports paintings, circa 1950s, capturing each of the three major sports at the time: baseball, football, and basketball. Not much is known about the origin of these paintings (unfortunately no information accompanied them), but we believe all to be professional commercial works that were used either for advertisements or interior book/magazine illustrations. All of the artworks have been executed on board, either in watercolor or gouache, and nearly all display editorial markings along the borders. The collection is comprised of the following: 1) Baseball (batter running from home, signed by "Robert Rigler," 14 x 18.5 inches). 2) Baseball (batter swinging, no signature, 8.5 x 11.5 inches). 3) Football (player running with ball, signed by "Wexler," 14 x 18 inches). 4) Football (player throwing pass, signed by "Fred Fixler," 14.5 x 18.5 inches). 5) Football (two-player image, passing and catching, signed by "Joe Littley," 15.25 x 19.5 inches). 6) Football (player catching a pass with a single defender rushing towards him, artist's signature illegible, 17 x 22 inches). 7) Basketball (two players at tip-off, no signature, 15 x 19 inches). All of the artworks are in Excellent to Mint condition with the exception of the basketball piece (Gd-Vg, staining along the base). Each has been matted with the exception of the smaller baseball artwork. Also included is a vintage 1950s Bo-Lynn's Flip Football Game board. This game utilized a standard deck of playing cards. The cardboard fold-over game board, which displays advertising for Coca-Cola throughout, features a colorful illustration of a game-in-progress scene, above which are the various plays based upon the card selected. The back panel provides the rules of the game. 22 x 14 inches (unfolded). Vg, with a tear along the fold line. Total: 8 items (7 sports paintings and game board).

The items in this lot are part of the deaccessioned property of a prominent northeast museum which has selected Robert Edward Auctions to handle the sale of donated sportscards and memorabilia in an effort to fund purchases more in line with the mission and goals of the museum.
