Roger Maris 1961 "Home-Run Victims" Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $360

Black-and-white photographic print of Roger Maris, signed by twenty-four pitchers who gave up one or more of his then record-breaking sixty home runs in 1961. The players represented here, with the number in parentheses noting what number home run (or home runs) they allowed to Maris in 1961, are Jim Archer (25), Norm Bass (27), Frank Baumann (37), Gary Bell (6 and 22), Jerry Casale (24), Gene Conley (8 and 10), Chuck Estrada (7), Paul Foytack (1), Frank Funk (32), Mudcat Grant (56), Ray Herbert (18 and 35), Johnny James (20), Russ Kemmerer (15 and 39), Marty Kutyna (45), Don Larsen (38), Ken McBride (50), Bill Monbouquette (33 and 36), Don Mossi (23), Milt Pappas (59), Billy Pierce (47 and 48), Bob Shaw (14), Dave Sisler (28), Tracy Stallard (61), and Dick Stigman (55). All of the signatures have been scripted in black fine-point marker, with the exception of Stallard (purple marker), and range from "6" to "10," averaging "9." This photo has a special provenance in that it originates directly from the personal collection of Jim "Doc" Ewell, who spent more than seven decades as a major league trainer, including long stints with both the Philadelphia Athletics (he began his career with the club in 1938) and Houston Astros. It has been consigned directly by Ewell's son. The photo (8.5 x 11) displays a small abrasion in the center, as well as a few minor creases. In Very Good condition overall. Also included with the photo is a one-page handwritten letter (8.5 x 11 inches; Ex) by Gene Conley in which he details the circumstances of the two home runs he served up to Maris in 1961. Total: 2 items (photo and letter). LOA from James Spence/JSA.
