1960 Topps Original Negatives Used To Produce Cards "Sheet" with McCovey Rookie! (43 Negatives)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540

Fascinating collection of forty-three original negatives used to produce 1960 Topps cards. All of these negatives were used by Topps to produce cards with numbers between #291 and #373. The prize of this collection is the negative for card #316, Hall of Famer Willie McCovey's rookie card. Negatives for Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn; minor stars Bill Skowron, Minnie Minoso, and Don Newcombe; and the New York Yankees Team are also included. (A complete list of all forty-three cards is available upon request.) These negatives were purchased at the famous 1989 Topps/Guernsey's auction (lot #318) and have been consigned to this auction directly from the original purchaser! Each negative measures approximately 2.25 x 2 inches (except for two horizontally-oriented negatives, which measure 3 x 2 inches) and is arranged neatly in four columns of eleven negatives. One negative is missing from the fourth column. The negatives are attached to a thin plastic overlay, presumably designed to hold them in place for review by the Topps art department. The complete display measures approximately 16.75 x 28 inches and is labeled "Board B Fronts" in marker at top. The plastic overlay displays some cosmetic flaws, including chipping at the edges or minor scratches, but the important negatives appear to be in Near Mint condition. This is an extremely interesting and unusual card-production relic, the likes of which we have never seen before, which originates directly from the archives of Topps and would make an outstanding addition to any Topps collection or companion to any 1960 Topps complete set.
