Dieges & Clust Awards Photograph Collection
Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $120
Collection of five photographs (each 8 x 10 inches), originating from the Dieges & Clust archives, picturing various trophies, awards, and jewelry produced by the company. These photos were file copies, saved by the company to document its work and used for promotional purposes as well. Each of the offered photos highlights one or more of the most prominent awards produced by Dieges & Clust. The most striking photo captures a showroom window, which includes not only Mickey Mantle's 1956 MVP Award, but various sports trophies, clocks, rings, medallions, plaques, and pins. A pencil notation on the reverse reads "Union Station 1956." Ex. The remaining photos are as follows: 1) Photo of a spectacular presentation award to Joe McCarthy from his players in 1938. The plaque features an image of McCarthy in relief, surrounded by portrait photos of each of the New York Yankees players, plus owner Jacob Ruppert and general manager Ed Barrow. Vg, with a number of moderate creases. 2) Photo of Hank Aaron's 1956 MVP Award. Vg-Ex. 3) Photo of the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award issued to Colonel William May Garland in 1932. Vg. 4) Photo picturing three awards: Sid Mercer Memorial Award presented to Bob Turley in 1959; Bill Slocum Memorial Award presented to Dan Daniel in 1959; and Babe Ruth Award [World Series MVP] presented to Elston Howard in 1958. Vg-Ex. Total: 5 photos.
This material has been culled from a much larger Dieges & Clust collection that was consigned to this auction just as our catalog was going to press. As such, all but one of the twenty-eight Dieges & Clust lots in this auction (featuring an amazing array of fascinating material, including documents, artwork, manufacturing dies, photos, and sample jewelry) can be found on the Internet Only portion of our sale. The entire collection originates from the family of a former Dieges & Clust executive, who, we are told, literally rescued most of the items offered here from the garbage dumpster after the company was sold to Herff Jones in 1979. Prior to that time, the company, which was founded in 1898 by Col. Charles Dieges and Prosper Clust, was noted for its exquisite sports-related jewelry, including the manufacture of nearly all of the World Series rings and press pins produced between the years 1923 and 1956. Additionally, the company also designed and produced baseball's MVP Award, the Heisman Trophy, numerous sports trophies and figural pieces (including the famous series of "Spalding" baseball trophies issued in the 1920s), and the 1904 Olympic Medals, not to mention countless custom orders for athletes.
