Dieges & Clust Vintage Souvenir and Advertising Collection (3)

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $120

Collection of three souvenirs and advertising pieces originating from the Dieges & Clust archives. 1) Small, thin-metal advertising disc bearing the Dieges & Clust name and listing the company's New York address. The top portion of the disc, which bears a prepunched hole in the center, displays the company's eagle logo and the slogan "Better Grade Medals Trophies." The disc (1.25 inches in diameter) displays moderate tarnishing and scratches on the reverse. In Very Good condition. 2) Gold-colored money clip featuring the Dieges & Clust eagle logo and a small diamond in the center. The "D" and "C" initials are fashioned in blue enamel and the eagle's eye is represented by a tiny red stone. The lettering along the base reads "5 Years." Dieges & Clust was founded in 1898, which, presumably, would therefore date this money clip to 1903. Ex-Mt with light surface wear. 3) Dieges & Clust color palette (2.5 x 2 inches) displaying the different enamel hues available to customers. The metal palette displays the engraved address of the company's Providence, Rhode Island, address on the reverse. Ex, with light-to-moderate surface wear. Total: 3 items (advertising disc, money clip, and palette).

This material has been culled from a much larger Dieges & Clust collection that was consigned to this auction just as our catalog was going to press. As such, all but one of the twenty-eight Dieges & Clust lots in this auction (featuring an amazing array of fascinating material, including documents, artwork, manufacturing dies, photos, and sample jewelry) can be found on the Internet Only portion of our sale. The entire collection originates from the family of a former Dieges & Clust executive, who, we are told, literally rescued most of the items offered here from the garbage dumpster after the company was sold to Herff Jones in 1979. Prior to that time, the company, which was founded in 1898 by Col. Charles Dieges and Prosper Clust, was noted for its exquisite sports-related jewelry, including the manufacture of nearly all of the World Series rings and press pins produced between the years 1923 and 1956. Additionally, the company also designed and produced baseball's MVP Award, the Heisman Trophy, numerous sports trophies and figural pieces (including the famous series of "Spalding" baseball trophies issued in the 1920s), and the 1904 Olympic Medals, not to mention countless custom orders for athletes.
