Dieges & Clust "Heisman Memorial Trophy" Cufflinks and Pin

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $360

Collection of seven cufflinks and a pin specially produced by either Dieges & Clust or Herff Jones for issue at various Heisman Memorial Trophy award ceremonies over the years. (Dieges & Clust cast the first Heisman Trophy in 1935 and continued to manufacture the award every year afterward until the company was sold to Herff Jones in 1979. Herff Jones then continued that tradition for a number of years as well.) Both the cufflinks and pin are nearly identical in design and all feature a likeness of the Heisman Trophy displayed within the center of a football. The only differences between some of the pieces are in the positioning of the blue-and-white enamel trim and the lettering. Four of the cufflinks are stamped "10K Gold" on the reverse, with two bearing a Dieges & Clust logo on the reverse, and the other two bearing a Herff Jones logo on the reverse. The remaining four pieces display no manufacturer's stamping nor any indication of the gold content. The Dieges & Clust pair of cufflinks are specifically dated "1966" on the front. Two are dated "1986," and another is dated "1984." The remaining three are undated. Two of the cufflinks (the pair dated 1986) are missing their clasp attachments on the reverse, otherwise all of the items are in Excellent to Mint condition. Total: 8 items (7 cufflinks and 1 pin).

This material has been culled from a much larger Dieges & Clust collection that was consigned to this auction just as our catalog was going to press. As such, all but one of the twenty-eight Dieges & Clust lots in this auction (featuring an amazing array of fascinating material, including documents, artwork, manufacturing dies, photos, and sample jewelry) can be found on the Internet Only portion of our sale. The entire collection originates from the family of a former Dieges & Clust executive, who, we are told, literally rescued most of the items offered here from the garbage dumpster after the company was sold to Herff Jones in 1979. Prior to that time, the company, which was founded in 1898 by Col. Charles Dieges and Prosper Clust, was noted for its exquisite sports-related jewelry, including the manufacture of nearly all of the World Series rings and press pins produced between the years 1923 and 1956. Additionally, the company also designed and produced baseball's MVP Award, the Heisman Trophy, numerous sports trophies and figural pieces (including the famous series of "Spalding" baseball trophies issued in the 1920s), and the 1904 Olympic Medals, not to mention countless custom orders for athletes.
