1923 New York Yankees Collection Including an Order for Yankee Stadium Opening-Day Pins! (Dieges & Clust Archives)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $360

This collection is comprised of a Dieges & Clust order form and two file cards, each of which records the purchase of items by the New York Yankees pertaining to the club's historic 1923 season. The file cards were part of the company's permanent records and document the various items purchased by the Yankees through the years. Among the information noted on the cards are the item, date ordered, lettering, description, and cost. The first file card, which records purchases made between 1923 and 1928, includes orders for special pins commemorating the opening of Yankee Stadium on April 18, 1923, and baseball fobs. No information regarding the lettering for the fobs is provided, but the order date, "12/20/23," almost certainly indicates they were produced to commemorate the club's first World Championship. The other file card records a 1936 order for a baseball charm, lettered "Yankees World Champions 1923 C T Mc M." The order form in this collection, dated 10/9/36, corresponds directly to that very charm and makes note of exactly the same inscription in the respective information field. Both file cards (8 x 5 inches) display heavy wear, including creases, tears, and tape repair. In Good to Very Good condition overall. The order card (7.5 x 5.5 inches) is in Very Good condition.

This material has been culled from a much larger Di eges & Clust collection that was consigned to this auction just as our catalog was going to press. As such, all but one of the twenty-eight Dieges & Clust lots in this auction (featuring an amazing array of fascinating material, including documents, artwork, manufacturing dies, photos, and sample jewelry) can be found on the Internet Only portion of our sale. The entire collection originates from the family of a former Dieges & Clust executive, who, we are told, literally rescued most of the items offered here from the garbage dumpster after the company was sold to Herff Jones in 1979. Prior to that time, the company, which was founded in 1898 by Col. Charles Dieges and Prosper Clust, was noted for its exquisite sports-related jewelry, including the manufacture of nearly all of the World Series rings and press pins produced between the years 1923 and 1956. Additionally, the company also designed and produced baseball's MVP Award, the Heisman Trophy, numerous sports trophies and figural pieces (including the famous series of "Spalding" baseball trophies issued in the 1920s), and the 1904 Olympic Medals, not to mention countless custom orders for athletes.
