1962 Topps "Civil War News" Unissued Cards Original Artwork Collection (6)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,400
Collection of six original 1962 Topps "Civil War News" card artworks (5.25 x 3.75 inches), none of which were ever issued as part of this extremely popular set which chronicles the rich history of the Civil War. The set, which is complete at eighty-eight cards, was originally proposed to be 132 cards. As a result, many artworks were produced for these additional cards but were never used as Topps opted for a smaller set. The six artworks offered in this collection are all extremely detailed. One artwork depicts fleeing families, two artworks depict a single Confederate soldier, and three artworks depict battle scenes between Union and Confederate forces, including images of blood and flaming explosions, exactly the type of horrifying detail that many parents felt was inappropriate to market to youngsters in a historical bubble-gum card set, and which distinguishes this set from other historical sets. While all "Civil War News" card artwork is traditionally attributed to Norm Saunders, the research of Norm Saunders' son, David, an expert and scholar regarding his father's work, reveals that many cards in the set are actually a collaborative effort by Norm Saunders and fellow Topps staff artists Maurice Blumenfeld or Bob Powell. The artworks are in Near Mint condition. Total: 6 artworks. SOLD FOR $2,400
