1934 R136 National Chicle "Sky Birds" Original Card Artwork #99 David S. Ingalls
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,100
Offered is the actual original artwork to card #99 David S. Ingalls from the 108-card 1934 R136 "Sky Birds" set issued by National Chicle. The "Sky Birds" set features famous pilots and airplanes of the day, and has always been regarded as one of the most popular of all 1930s non-sport gum-card sets, in part because of its bright colors, sharp details, art deco designs, and popular subject matter. Artwork for card sets from the 1930s is exceedingly rare. Back in the late 1970s a group of material surfaced in the collecting world directly from the family of a National Chicle employee, which included approximately 100 artworks from several National Chicle non-sport sets, including "Sky Birds." This artwork originated directly from that historic find. Robert Edward Auctions handled virtually all of this material at the time. Today, these artworks have long been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world. When they do turn up, all can be traced directly to this find. The offered artwork is an exceptional example of these extremely rare and highly prized original 1930s gum-card paintings. As is the case with all National Chicle "Sky Bird" artworks, the painting is gouache on thick artist's board, and measures 4-5/8 x 7 inches (image 4-5/8 x 5.5 inches). A pencil notation in the lower margin reads "Davis Ingalls," which was corrected to "David S. Ingalls" on the issued card. Standard production-related remnants on the reverse. The artwork is extremely clean, with sharp, bright, crisp colors. Excellent condition. SOLD FOR $5,100
