1942 The Three Stooges Matri-Phony One-Sheet Linen-Backed Movie Poster

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,200

One-sheet movie poster issued for the 1942 Three Stooges short Matri-Phony. Our research indicates this is one of only two known examples of this one sheet. Taking place in "Ancient Erysipelas," the film's plot involved the boys helping a woman avoid the matrimonial advances of the despotic Emperor Octopus Grabus. Three Stooges one-sheets dating from the team's "golden age" (1934-1947; those featuring Curly as part of the trio) are not only the most desirable of all paper from their films, but also the rarest. Prior to this extraordinary offering by REA (which is being conducted over a number of auctions), we have seen fewer than twenty different-titled Three Stooges one-sheets from this early era offered at public auction in the past fifteen years. To put that number in proper perspective, it should be noted that the Stooges starred in ninety-seven shorts during that fourteen-year period. The linen-backed poster (27.5 x 39 inches) is slightly irregular in size for a one-sheet, but does not appear to be trimmed either along the top or bottom borders. That anomaly aside, the poster has benefitted from standard touchups along the fold lines, as well as to a few tiny interior areas, and is Excellent to Mint in appearance.
