1882 General William T. Sherman Signed Check

Bank check, dated February 24, 1882, signed by William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), famed Union general during the Civil War. The check, drawn on the Riggs & Co. bank of Washington, D.C., is made out to "Dft. Mrs. A. M. Thackara" in the amount of $16.70 and has been signed in black ink (grading "10") by "W. T. Sherman." Sherman, who is best known for his famous "March to the Sea" during the Civil War, which culminated in the capture of the city of Savannah on December 21, 1862, held the position of General of the Army at the time of this check. He relinquished the position one year later and retired from the military in 1884. The check (7.5 x 2.75 inches) displays a vertical fold, light toning, and two cancellation cuts (touching upon the signature) that have been reinforced on the reverse by clear tape.
