1877 Rutherford B. Hayes Handwritten Letter - Signed as President!
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $540
One-page handwritten letter, signed by Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), nineteenth President of the United States (1887-8881). In his letter (as President), dated October 10, 1877 on "Executive Mansion" stationery, Hayes writes to Major C. C. Shiffen, who is leaving his position at the Executive Mansion. In part: “In complying with your request of this date to be relieved from further duty at the Executive Mansion and assigned to a position in the office of the Paymaster General. . . I desire to express my acknowledgment of your valuable service during so long a time in the Executive Office where your successive promotions show the estimation in which you have been held. In the new duties to which your commission in the military service calls you, you will take with you my regard, and I shall always be grateful to hear of your continued [illegible word] and success. Sincerely, R. B. Hayes." Both the text and signature have been scripted in black fountain pen and grade "9." Hayes had only been in office for seven months at the time of this letter, but he clearly had great respect for the departing Major. Hayes was elected President in the Compromise of 1877, which also ended military occupation of the South and brought the reconstruction era to an end. During Hayes' four years in office he maintained the gold standard and helped quell the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 through the use of federal troops. The letter (5.5 x 9 inches) displays two horizontal mailing folds, minor toning along the edges, two small age spots, and minor ink smudging resulting from the letter having been folded shortly after it was written. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Matted and framed together with a color print of Hayes (6.25 x 9 inches) to total dimensions of 17.5 x 14 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. SOLD FOR $540
