Abraham Lincoln Signed Legal Document
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,280
Undated partial legal document signed by Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), sixteenth President of the United States. This document dates to Lincoln's career as an attorney and, based upon the partial text, most likely concerns a matter of debt collection. While there is a great deal of handwriting to this partial document, only the brief notation in the lower left corner is in the hand of Lincoln. A few of the words are illegible, but it appears to read "And the defendant/doth the like/[illegible] Lincoln p d (pro defendente, which means for the defendant)." All of Lincoln's text is boldly scripted in black ink and grades "10." Lincoln first began practicing law in 1837 and he had a reputation of taking any case brought before him, be it criminal or civil. He had three different partners during his 24-year legal career, and during that time he is said to have handled over 5,000 cases. Despite that fact, Lincoln signed legal documents are rare and this only the second example we have offered in the past ten years. The document (8 x 4 inches) displays a horizontal fold and slightly wavy borders along the top and left sides where it was trimmed. In Excellent condition overall. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA.
