1865 Andrew Johnson Signed Appointment - Signed as President!
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $600
One-page appointment, dated May 16, 1865, signed by Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), seventeenth President of the United States (1865-1869). The official government document appoints William H. Blair Deputy Postmaster of Hamilton, Ohio. The document, which is both printed and handwritten on parchment, has been officially signed in black ink along the bottom by President Andrew Johnson (grading "10") and countersigned by the Secretary of State. Documents signed by Johnson as president are scarcer than many collectors realize because Johnson utilized a signature ink stamp on many official documents (as opposed to personally signing them, as he did on this document). The official government seal, which is faded, remains affixed in the lower left corner. The document (13 x 9.5 inches) displays both horizontal and vertical fold lines, heavy toning, and a number of small border tears and creases. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Matted and framed together with a small photographic print of Johnson to total dimensions of 27 x 17.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
