1925 V31 Dominion Chocolate "Athletic Stars" Complete PSA-Graded Set (120)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $6,000

Presented is a remarkable complete set of 120 different cards from the 1925 V31 "Athletic Stars" series issued by Dominion Chocolate. Each card is graded and encapsulated by PSA. This fascinating issue features athletes from a number of different sports, including basketball, golf, and rugby. Most notably, the set also contains an extremely popular 32-card subset of early hockey subjects, including Hall of Famers Hooley Smith, Shorty Green, Newsy LaLonde, Harry Watson, Lionel Conacher, Aurel Joliat, and Georges Vezina. (The hockey-card subset currently ranks number one on the PSA Set Registry; a registry listing for the complete 120-card set is not currently offered.) Each card is printed in black and white and measures approximately 1-3/16 by 2-13/16 inches. A coupon at the bottom of each card advertises a promotional offer in which consumers could exchange a complete set of 120 coupons for a valuable prize. Miraculously, this entire set has been carefully assembled to feature only examples with coupons intact, an extreme rarity for sets designed in this way, as the coupon at the bottom of each card is frequently clipped away, as intended. While the condition of this set spans many grades, it presents exceptionally well throughout and is highlighted by numerous cards in exceptional condition, including nearly twenty-five percent of the Near Mint or better PSA-graded population.

PSA Grading Composite: MINT 9 (1 card):
#107. NM-MT 8 (6 cards): #21, 25, 26, 27, 96 (OC), and 109 (MC). NM 7 (12 cards): #8, 16, 24, 39, 45, 47, 62, 64, 73, 97, 102, and 111 (MC). EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 card): #22. EX-MT 6 (23 cards): #15, 17, 34, 36, 40, 42, 46, 55, 57, 61, 66, 67, 72, 74 Breen, 77, 81, 89, 90, 98, 110 (MC), 112, 114 Watson (HOF), and 115. EX+ 5.5 (10 cards): #4, 18, 20, 32, 33, 79, 80, 85, 103, and 104. EX 5 (18 cards): #2, 5, 9, 12, 31, 38, 41, 44, 50, 53, 68, 70, 82, 86, 87, 93, 94, and 106. VG-EX+ 4.5 (5 cards): #19, 52, 76, 84, and 91. VG-EX 4 (18 cards): #23, 29, 35, 43, 51, 54 (MC), 56, 59, 63, 65, 71, 88, 92, 95 LaLonde (HOF), 100, 101, 105, and 113 (MC). VG+ 3.5 (1 card): #108. VG 3 (12 cards): #1, 10, 11, 14, 28, 37, 49, 69 Smith (HOF), 75, 99, 116, and 118 Conacher (HOF). GOOD 2 (5 cards): #6 (MC), 13, 78 (MC), 119 Joliat (HOF), and 120 Vezina (HOF). FAIR 1.5 (2 cards): #3 and 60. POOR 1 (6 cards): #7, 30, 48, 58, 83 Green (HOF), and 117.

An extraordinary complete set like this does not just happen to come together by chance; it must be painstakingly assembled by a dedicated collector over a period of many years. It is not uncommon to see a few samples, or even occasionally a complete 32-card hockey subset, available for sale, but this is the first full 120-card complete set of 1925 Dominion Chocolate cards we have ever seen offered at public auction. This is not a set that can reasonably be collected in overall ultra high grade. Their unusual size and coupon redemption offer make them especially susceptible to wear and modest technical grades. The examples in the offered set are extremely pleasing overall, and if desired, this set could be brought to VG or better across the board with a few targeted upgrades. This is an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a complete set of this unusual multisport issue, entirely graded by PSA (that alone represents a great expense), containing several notable condition and subject highlights, including cards of seven important hockey Hall of Famers. Total: 120 cards. SOLD FOR $6,000
