1962 Topps #90 Fran Tarkenton Rookie SGC NM/MT+ 92

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $4,200

Graded NM/MT+ 92 by SGC (submitted by REA). Exceptional ultra high-grade example of Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton's short-printed rookie card from the 1962 Topps football set. One of only two examples graded at this level by SGC with none higher. The 1962 Topps football set is particularly difficult to collect in high grade, as the black flush-to-the-border design of the set makes them particularly susceptible to corner and edge wear. The offered card is bright, crisp, and clean, with four sharp corners, bold colors, and outstanding centering. An extremely slight rough cut on the top edge is the only discernible hint of wear against the otherwise flawless black borders. Clean reverse. This card originates from an old-time complete set consigned to this auction (which was probably put away in 1962 and has not seen the light of day in decades!) and is being offered individually due to its extraordinary condition. It is rare to find any 1962 Topps football card in such high grade (less than two percent grade NM/MT+ or higher according to the combined PSA and SGC population reports), but it is especially rare to find such a high-quality example of a key rookie card like the offered Fran Tarkenton, which would be worthy of any world-class 1962 Topps football set or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection. The SMR value in the assigned grade is $1,500.
