1946-1948 Bill Terry Pro-Model Bat (H&B Factory Record Match!)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $948

Bill Terry H&B signature-model bat (predating model numbers) dating to the 1946-1948 manufacturing period. The bat displays evidence of heavy use along its entire length, including several ball and stitch marks, cleat marks, and slight checking (grain separation). A crack on the back of the barrel has been professionally repaired. As John Taube notes in the accompanying LOA from PSA/DNA, "A review of Billy Terry's Professional Bat Ordering Record (PBOR) on file at Louisville Slugger Inc., indicates that there was an order made on April 19th 1946 for two bats with the notation B. T. - 34 inches." While it is exciting to find factory records that match this extremely rare bat, it is also the case that Terry was long retired from baseball at that time. Because of that, it is the opinion of PSA/DNA that "the bat's use by Bill Terry cannot be confirmed." However, the fact that the bat was personally ordered by Terry is extremely noteworthy, and strongly suggests the possibility that he used it in some capacity, perhaps as a coach or for use in an Old Timers' Day game. Terry was one of the greatest hitters of the modern era and the last National League player to hit over .400, a feat he accomplished in 1930. He retired in 1936 with a .341 lifetime average, which places him fifteenth on the all-time list. Bill Terry pro-model bats from any era are extremely rare (in fact, this is the first we have EVER had!), and this bat would make a fine representative example for any advanced Hall of Fame bat collection. Length: 34 inches. Weight: 34.9 ounces. LOA from John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $948
