1942 Pride of the Yankees New York City Subway Sign

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $474

Rare New York City subway sign issued in promotion of the 1942 RKO Radio Pictures release of Pride of the Yankees. The poster features images of both Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright (as Lou and Eleanor Gehrig), as well as portrait images of Babe Ruth and Bill Dickey, both of whom played themselves in the film. The poster also pictures an early scene from the film of boys playing on the sandlot. We have never seen another example of this attractive poster (21 x 11 inches) and it must be noted that it is not one of the standard movie-studio posters issued for Pride of the Yankees, either in 1942 or in 1949 (the year of its rerelease). Based upon the text, it appears to have been issued by the City of New York specifically for display in city subway cars: "Go See/'Pride of the Yankees'/Picture of the Month/Lou Gehrig's life story will touch/the heart of every New Yorker/Sincerely, Susan Lee/Motion Picture Editor, N.Y. Subways." The poster is printed on cardboard stock and is in Poor condition, with numerous tears and tape reinforcement along all four borders. A vintage baseball cartoon by Alan Maver has been affixed to the reverse. This piece will require significant professional restoration if one wishes to display it properly. While we acknowledge the major condition problems, the fact that it is a heretofore unknown display piece promoting one of the most beloved baseball movies of all time, not to mention that it features Babe Ruth, makes it a worthwhile resurrection project for both baseball and movie collectors. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $474
