1961 Roger Maris 61st Home Run Program
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $474
New York Yankees program from the game played on October 1, 1961, in which Roger Maris hit his record-breaking 61st home run off of Boston Red Sox pitcher Tracy Stallard. Strangely, only 23,154 fans turned out that day to see if Maris could break Ruth's long-standing single-season home run record. As a result, programs from that historic game are now quite scarce. It should be noted that while this program undoubtedly dates to the Yankees' final three-game series against the Red Sox in 1961 (the program lists the dates and starting times for the World Series games against the Reds, beginning on October 4th), it has not been scored. Its attribution to Maris' 61st home-run game is predicated solely on the vintage handwritten notation in blue ink that appears along the top border of page three that reads "Maris Hit 61 HR Today." The twenty-page program (6 x 9.25 inches) remains in Near Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $474
