1916-1957 New York Giants Scorecard Collection (31)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,304

Collection of thirty-one New York Giants programs, spanning the years 1916-1957, plus a complete run of seven New York Giants yearbooks from 1951 through 1957. Among the highlights are a 1918 program featuring Jim Thorpe in the lineup for the Giants, a 1951 playoff program from Game 2 of the best-of-three series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, and a seldom-seen program issued on June 19, 1945, which was "General Eisenhower Day" at both the Polo Grounds and New York City (Eisenhower was given a ticker-tape parade by New York City that day, with over four million people turning out to welcome "Ike" home.) The "Eisenhower Day" program is accompanied by two ticket stubs from the game and an Eisenhower pin that, presumably, was distributed to the attending fans. Unless otherwise noted, all of the programs have been scored, with a few also featuring handwritten notations on the cover detailing specifics of the game (date, score, etc.). As one might expect, the earliest programs in this group were either the fold-over variety, or only one or two pages, with the books becoming more substantial as the years went on. Most of the programs from the 1950s average twenty pages. Condition ranges from Poor to Excellent, averaging Vg-Ex. The number of programs for each year (if more than one) are noted in parenthesis. 1916 (Chicago), 1918 (Brooklyn; with Thorpe in the lineup for Giants [three hits]), 1922 (St. Louis; with Bancroft, Frisch, Youngs, and Kelly in lineup for Giants, and Hornsby for Cardinals), 1931 (Phillies; with Ott, Terry, Jackson, and Hubbell [three-hit shutout] in lineup for Giants), 1933 (Cincinnati; with Ott and Terry in lineup for Giants, and Bottomley, Hafey, and Lombardi for Reds), 1934 (Boston; with Ott, Terry, Jackson, and Hubbell [six-hit shutout] in lineup for Giants), 1935 (Pittsburgh; with Ott, Terry, and Jackson in lineup for Giants, and L. Waner, P. Waner, and Traynor for Pirates), 1936 (Cincinnati), 1937 (Brooklyn), 1938 (Brooklyn), 1939 (Philadelphia; not scored), 1940 (Chicago; not scored), 1941 (St. Louis; not scored), 1942 (Boston; not scored), 1943 (St. Louis; not scored), 1944 (Philadelphia; not scored), 1945 (2, Brooklyn and Boston. The game against Boston dates from June 19th, which was "General Eisenhower Day" both at the Polo Grounds and in New York. The program, which is not scored, is accompanied by two ticket stubs [Gd-Vg] that clearly denote "General Eisenhower Day" in print, plus an Eisenhower pin that was presumably distributed at the game. The pin [1.25 inches in diameter] pictures Eisenhower in uniform surrounded by a red-white-and-blue, stars-and-stripes border motif. Near Mint, with oxidation on the reverse), 1946 (Boston), 1947 (Boston), 1948 (Brooklyn; not scored), 1949 (Boston), 1950 (Chicago), 1951 (2, both against Brooklyn. One is a regular-season program that is not scored. The other is scored for the second playoff game between the two clubs on October 2nd, and records a 10-0 Brooklyn victory. Signed in blue Sharpie by Willie Mays on the cover and Clem Labine on the interior, with each signature grading "10"), 1952 (Brooklyn), 1953 Brooklyn (not scored), 1954 (Milwaukee), 1955 (Pittsburgh; with Clemente in lineup for Pirates [rookie season]; partially scored), 1956 (Pittsburgh; Mays home-run game), and 1957 (Pittsburgh; Mays home-run game). Also included with the scorecards is a complete run of seven New York Giants yearbooks spanning the years 1951-1957 (Gd-Vg overall), plus eight various issues of Giants Jottings, the club's monthly fan newsletter, dating from 1937 through 1947 (Vg overall). Total: 31 programs, 7 yearbooks, and 8 newsletters. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,304
