1930 New York Giants Silver Pass - Issued to DeWolfe Hopper!

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,185

1930 New York Giants sterling silver pass issued to famed actor DeWolf Hopper, best known today for his definitive recitation of Casey at the Bat. The pass is engraved "De Wolfe Hopper & One" on the reverse. Additional reverse engravings denote the pass number, "289," and manufacturer's name, "Lambert Bros./N.Y./Sterling." Any New York Giants sterling silver pass is a prize but one issued to DeWolf Hopper has a special additional dimension of interest. William DeWolf Hopper was the first actor to recite Casey at the Bat on stage, which he did on August 14, 1888, at Wallick's Theatre in New York. The recitation was an impromptu performance in honor of the many members of the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs who were in attendance that night. The positive reaction to the poem was so overwhelming that it became his signature piece for the remainder of his career (by his recollection he performed it over 10,000 times on stage). It was only fitting that Hopper immortalized Casey at the Bat, for he was one of the most ardent baseball "cranks" of his day, with the Polo Grounds serving as his second home during the baseball season. Needless to say, Hopper probably made good use of this pass in 1930. The decorative silver passes issued by the New York Giants in the 1920s and early 1930s to VIPs, executives, and dignitaries have always been very highly prized by collectors. Few have been seen that were issued to a celebrity as prominent as DeWolf Hopper. The pass (1.75 x 1.25 inches) displays light wear commensurate with its age and former use, and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500++. SOLD FOR $1,185
