1916 Joe Jackson "Double Cover" Baseball Magazine Issue

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,422

Baseball Magazine was, for nearly half a century, the preeminent periodical chronicling our National Pastime. Early Baseball Magazines have always been highly prized by collectors both for their rarity and display value. The "Joe Jackson Number" released in March of 1916 is perhaps the most sought-after of all Baseball Magazine editions. Jackson is featured on the front cover, and of course is also featured in numerous images on interior pages, being the lead story of the issue. The back cover, which is an ad for Remington, also pictures an image similar to the cover of Jackson, only he is holding a Remington Rifle in place of his famed "Black Betsy." The Remington name appears along the top, while the bottom caption reads "Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb's Only Rival - They Both Shoot Remingtons." Interestingly, even though Jackson was traded from Cleveland to Chicago during the later part of the 1915 season, both illustrations still picture him in a Cleveland cap as painted by premier illustrator J. F. Kernan. This is one of the key early editions of Baseball Magazine and one of the most appealing Joe Jackson display pieces of the era. The magazine (7 x 10 inches) displays numerous tiny edge tears to both the front and back cover, to which there have been a few instances of small tape repair on the interior. There is also a small tape repair to the top of the exterior spine. The covers both display moderate wear, and one of the pages has a large tear (paper loss). Technically in Good to Very Good condition, but with superior visual appeal. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,422
