Babe Ruth Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,370

Original Babe Ruth photo, circa 1930s, signed by Ruth on the matting. Ruth has inscribed the matting in black fountain pen, "To My Pal/Art Bissell/From/Babe Ruth." Both the inscription and signature grade "8/9" and contrast exceptionally well against the light background. Art Bissell was a very well known collector who began acquiring material during the 1920s. At first, his collection was dedicated to Honus Wagner, but as the years went on, he began acquiring autographs and memorabilia from many of the game's top stars. The offered piece, which is probably one of many Ruth signed items he obtained over the years, is certainly an exceptional example, and was no doubt highly prized by Bissell, given the personalized inscription from Ruth to him. The photo underneath the matting measures 5.75 x 7.5 inches with evidence of trimming to both the left and right borders. The border areas on the front and reverse displays both surface paper residue and adhesive/tape residue from the mount having once been glued down on top of it. A few light creases are also evident. These flaws are naturally covered by the matting, and when displayed with the matting (as intended) the photo has an Excellent overall appearance. The matting itself (6.5 x 10 inches) is slightly toned, and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an outstanding Ruth signed piece with the added special provenance of having originated from legendary early memorabilia collector Art Bissell's personal collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,370
