1889 A35 Goodwin Round Album Near-Complete Set (8 of 9 Player Pages)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,666

Presented is a near-complete set of eight (out of the nine) pages of the 1889 Goodwin "Round Album" featuring ballplayers. Only the Anson portrait page is missing for completion. (Note: The all-advertising page and back cover, which do not feature players, are not included here, but the front cover, which also does not feature players, is included.) The Goodwin baseball-shaped premium album was available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Old Judge Cigarettes. The reverse of each page, printed in blue, features player records and team schedules. The eight pages offered include three pages each with a single beautiful full-color portrait (Kelly, Ward, and Comiskey), and all five pages featuring four players each, including Hall of Famers Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe, Roger Connor, John Ward, and Jim O’Rourke in full-length poses. All eight Round Album pages appear Ex or better at a glance with outstanding colors and bright, white background. All are ideal for display. Technically, the pages grade as follows: 1) Comiskey portrait page has a small chip in the right border and three extremely tiny (almost impossible to see) pinholes, two in the white space near the right border and one near the "O" in the team name. Clean reverse with light, natural toning. 2) Kelly portrait page has an approximately 2-inch tear near the clasp hole, light wrinkling near the name on front and back, and a tiny pinhole at the center of the top border. 3) Ward portrait page presents as Ex with only a small, border abrasion on the left border near the clasp hole and light, natural toning on the reverse. 4) O'Rourke multiplayer page is Vg with light edge wear and wrinkling along the top border as well as stress wear around the clasp hole and moderate toning on reverse. 5) Slattery multiplayer page is Gd/Vg with two small wrinkles near the top and right edge, stress wear around the clasp hole, and a small chip of paper loss on front near Crane. 6-9) Three multiplayer pages (those with Welch, Foster, and Mutrie on the left) remain attached to the front cover by means of a clasp. The three player pages are overall Excellent with only the Mutrie page displaying a vertical crease near the left border from heavy paging through the album over time. All three reverses display moderate toning. The cover displays the same vertical crease as the adjacent page with light, scattered wrinkling and surface wear, including a small chip of paper loss, visible. While some of these pages have minor technical flaws, all have outstanding eye-appeal, and are crisp and clean. The Goodwin “Round Album,” as it has always been known to collectors, is one of the most substantial and beautiful of all nineteenth-century baseball items, and is by far the most desirable of all tobacco albums. Even though this album is not complete, individual Round Album pages are highly prized by collectors and frequently trade. It is certain that, with a little patience, a dedicated collector can locate the missing page to complete this album. Total: 9 pages (8 with players and 1 front cover). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666
