1948 Leaf Gum Original-Owner Collection (53) Including 16 "Rare Leafs" and Jackie Robinson

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $7,703

Collection of fifty-three cards from the 1948 Leaf Gum set highlighted by ten Hall of Famers and sixteen of the "Rare Leaf" short prints. These short prints are especially noteworthy and exceptional to find in an original-owner collection. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Leafs are without question one of the most difficult postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. Overall condition is 47% Ex/Mt to Nr/Mt, 24% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 29% Vg or lesser. The rare short prints, included in the preceding condition composite, specifically grade as follows: six Vg-Ex, four Vg, and six Pr to Gd. This is a very sharp-looking collection. These cards have not seen the light of day in decades and have been consigned to this auction by the family of an old-time collector. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: Two #11 Rizzuto RC (EX/NM 80 and Ex+), 32 Spahn RC (EX/NM+ 82), two 38 Kluszewski (Ex+ and Ex), 59 Appling (Vg-Ex+), 70 Wagner (Vg), 79 Robinson (Vg, appears Ex but downgraded due to discoloration on front), 83 Doerr (Ex+), 91 Kiner RC (VG/EX 50), 106 Boudreau (Vg-Ex+), and 117 Gordon (Ex/Mt). Short Prints: Two #30, 45, two 62, two 66, 113, two 121, 123, 133, 137, 143, 158, and 165. Common cards: Two #10, two 17, 26, 27, 39, four 49, 50, two 56, 57, three 61, 65, 72, 77, 125, and three 128. This is a very impressive-looking collection with many significant highlights from this classic gum-card issue. Total: 53 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $7,703
