1933 R319 Goudey Near-Complete Set (228/240)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $10,073

Offered is a beautiful, near-complete set of 1933 Goudey Gum cards, originating directly from the family of the gentleman who personally collected these cards in the year of issue! Carefully preserved for decades, this set is bright and clean throughout, missing only twelve cards for completion: #106 Lajoie, 108, 116, 161, 207 Ott, 229 Vaughan, all four Ruths, and both Gehrigs. The six Ruth and Gehrig cards are offered individually in this auction due to their impressive high grades (and value), which naturally makes this near-complete set far more affordable than if these six cards were included. The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Approximately 40% of the cards within this set have small, light pencil markings on the reverse (usually a small number or numbers). Without reference to these markings, the set grades 42% Ex, 36% Vg-Ex, and 22% Vg (including some lesser). Taking the markings into account, the set grades 31% Ex, 15% Vg-Ex, and 54% Vg or lesser (mostly due to the reverse). We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC. Pencil marks are noted where applicable on the key cards below. Keys: #1 Bengough (Vg, typewritten name on reverse), 2 Vance (Vg), 5 Herman (Vg, pencil), 7 Lyons (Vg, pencil), 19 Dickey (Vg-Ex, pencil), 20 Terry (Vg-Ex+), 22 Traynor (Vg-Ex), 23 Cuyler (Vg-Ex, pencil), 25 Waner (Pr), 29 Foxx (Vg+, pencil), 31 Lazzeri (Pr), 35 Simmons (Vg+, pencil), 42 Collins (Fr/Gd, appears Ex but small paper loss on reverse), 44 Bottomley (Ex), 47 Manush (Vg), 49 Frisch (Vg), 56 Ruffing (Vg-Ex, pencil), 58 O'Doul (Ex), 60 Hoyt (Ex, pencil), 62 Martin (Vg-Ex+, pencil), 63 Cronin (Ex+), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex+), 73 Haines (Ex, pencil), 74 Rixey (Ex), 76 Cochrane (EX 60), 79 Faber (Ex), 89 Speaker (EX 60), 102 Jackson (Vg-Ex, pencil), 103 Combs (Ex), 107 Manush (Ex, pencil), 109 Cronin (Vg-Ex, pencil), 110 Goslin (Ex, pencil), 117 Maranville (Ex), 119 Hornsby (Gd/Vg), 125 Terry (Ex, pencil), 127 Ott (Ex, pencil), 128 Klein (Vg-Ex+, pencil), 133 Lindstrom (Vg-Ex+), 134 Rice (Ex), 138 Pennock (Ex), 147 Durocher (Vg-Ex), 154 Foxx (AUTH, slight trim, otherwise Ex+), 158 Berg (Vg), 164 Waner (Vg-Ex+, pencil), 165 Sewell (Ex), 168 Goslin (EX 60), 187 Manush (Vg-Ex+), 188 Hornsby (EX 60), 189 Cronin (Ex), 194 Averill (Vg-Ex, pencil), 197 Ferrell (Vg-Ex+, pencil), 202 Hartnett (Ex, pencil), 209 Luque (Ex), 211 Wilson (Ex), 216 Gomez (Vg, pencil), 220 Grove (Ex), 222 Gehringer (Vg-Ex, pencil), 223 Dean (Ex, pencil), 227 Herman (Vg+, pencil), 230 Hubbell (EX/NM 80), 232 O'Doul (Ex), 234 Hubbell (Ex, pencil), and 240 Schumacher (Vg, pencil). This collection of 228 different 1933 Goudeys (missing only twelve cards including #106 Lajoie) has many highlights and is an extremely attractive near-complete set of this classic 1930s gum-card issue. The equivalent SMR value of just five of the graded cards (not including the one card graded "Authentic" and not including the 222 ungraded cards!) is $1,645. Total: 228 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $10,073
