1922 E120 American Caramel Babe Ruth PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,480

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Extremely attractive, high-grade E120 American Caramel of Babe Ruth, the key card from this distinctive early 1920s caramel issue. Only four examples have ever been graded higher by PSA (two EX+ 5.5, one EX-MT 6, and one NM-MT 8). Ruth is featured in full uniform holding a baseball in his right hand. This is an exceptional example of one of the great classic Ruth cards of the early 1920s. Bright and clean, both front and back, with flawless image clarity, excellent centering, and strong corners displaying just a hint of wear (most noticeable to the bottom two). The reverse is also perfectly clean and boldly printed. While Babe Ruth cards have always held a special place with collectors, interest in high-grade, early Ruth cards have seen a dramatic increase in recent years. This is a very attractive high-grade example of key card Babe Ruth from this classic 1920s caramel set that is the most comprehensive set of the era, issued during Ruth's third year with the Yankees. Auction results for E120 Ruth cards in high grade are naturally few and far between but appear to suggest a higher value than the SMR value for the assigned grade, which is $4,000. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $9,480
