1914 T216-2 "Mino Cigarettes" Eddie Plank

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,659

Extremely rare sample card of 1914 T216-2 "Mino Cigarettes" featuring Eddie Plank of the St. Louis Feds. The T216-2 "Mino Cigarettes" set is one of the rarest of all 1910-era tobacco-card issues. Produced by the People's Tobacco Co. of New Orleans, the T216-2 set was regionally issued only in the Louisiana area. Cards from this set feature advertising from three People's Tobacco Co. brands: Kotton, Mino, and Virginia Extra. All are rare; Mino may be the rarest of the three advertising backs. All Mino Tobacco cards are uncommon, but an example of key Hall of Famer Eddie Plank is especially desirable to serious collectors. The offered sample card features a side profile of Plank illustrated in brilliant, bold colors and set against a purple background. Light, even wear to the corners, flawless surface with all-original gloss, and excellent centering with a particularly full top border. Downgraded to PR 1 by PSA due to an area of paper loss along the top border, which blends in to the off-white border and affects only a very tiny spot in the background of the image. Without this, the card presents as solid Vg-Ex. The reverse is beautifully centered with a crisply printed bold advertisement for Mino Cigarettes (a tiny chip of paper loss is present in the first "t" in "Cigarettes"). T216s tend to survive in very modest condition, which makes this sample all the more noteworthy. This is an extremely attractive sample of key Hall of Famer Eddie Plank, presenting at a level far superior to its technically accurate assigned grade, from this rare and important tobacco set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659
