1911 T205 Gold Border Near-Complete Set (200/208)
Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $9,480
The T205 Gold Borders set is universally recognized as one of the most classic of all tobacco-card issues and includes all the great stars of the era and many rarities. Presented is a near-complete set of 200 cards. This set is missing only eight cards for a complete basic set (Adkins, Cady, Doyle, Frick, McAllister, Merritt, Nee, and Rowan). This set has been consigned by the family of a very old-time collector who assembled this set decades ago, card by card. One variation (Dougherty/red sock) is also included along with five duplicates. Though the cards span a variety of grades, all present with excellent eye-appeal, with even the lesser-graded cards exhibiting bright colors and crisp focus. We have selected eight cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: Baker (Fr), Barger/part "B" (Gd+), Bender (VG/EX+ 55), Bresnahan/mouth closed (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), Bresnahan/mouth open (Fr), Brown (Gd, American Beauty), Chance (Pr, Sovereign), Chase/left ear (Vg+), Chase/frame extends (Gd+), Cicotte/"Black Sox" (Vg), Clarke (Gd), Cobb (POOR 10), Collins/mouth closed (Vg), Collins/mouth open (Pr), Crandall/"t" not crossed (Fr), Dahlen (Vg), Donohue (Vg), Doughtery/white sock (Fr), Dougherty/red sox (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), Duffy (Gd+), Evers (Vg), Fisher (Pr), Ford/white (Gd), Graham/Cubs (Gd), Grant (Fr), Gray/no stats on back (Pr), Griffith (Vg), Harmon/left ear (Pr), Hoblitzell/"Cin." after 1908 stat (Pr, American Beauty), Huggins (Fr), Jennings (Pr), Johnson (GOOD+ 35), Joss (POOR 10), Karger (Vg), Kleinow (color added, otherwise Fr), Latham/W. A. Latham on back (Vg-Ex), Leifield/"A" on front (Fr), Marquard (Gd+), Mathewson (GOOD+ 35), McGraw (VG/EX+ 55), Raymond (Pr), Rowan (Vg, Polar Bear), Scanlan (Fr/Gd), Shean/Cubs (Vg), Speaker (Pr), Suggs (color added, otherwise Vg), Sweeney (color added, otherwise Vg), Tinker (Vg+), Turner (Vg), Vaughan (Pr), Wagner (Gd), Wallace/with cap (Fr), Wallace/no cap - one line of 1910 stats (Pr), Walsh (Fr), Wheat (Fr), White (Pr, Polar Bear), Wilhelm/"suffe ed" in bio (Pr), Wiltse/right ear (Gd), and Young (VG/EX+ 55). Minor Leaguers: Batch (Fr), J. Collins (EX 60), Dunn (Fr), Hanford (Gd), Lee (Vg), and Phelan (Vg). The balance of the cards grade 53% Vg (including some better) Vg-Ex, 32% Fr to Gd, and 15% Pr (including some trimmed or color added). Most of the backs are Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Hassan, or Honest Long Cut, but also included are Cycle (one), Sovereign (six), Polar Bear (sixteen), and American Beauty (six). This is a very attractive near-complete set assembled in the early days of organized collecting, including almost all of the many Hall of Famers, minor leaguers, and many rarities that make the T205 Gold Borders set so challenging to complete. The equivalent SMR value for just the eight graded cards (factoring in the five half grades at the lower whole grade level and not including the 192 ungraded cards) is $2,895. Total: 206 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $9,480
