1909-1911 T206 Walter Johnson Portrait - Sweet Caporal Overprint Reverse

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,659

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Extremely attractive example of one of collecting's most classic cards. The T206 Walter Johnson portrait is one of the most famous of all vintage baseball cards and is widely recognized to be among Walter Johnson's most striking cards. This is a beautiful example! It is crisp and clean, with bold colors and a bright yellow background. The corners are square with just a hint of even, very light wear. Centered 60/40 left to right. Strong Excellent appearance at first glance, downgraded due to the presence of a single light surface crease (originating in the left border and stopping at Johnson's temple) which does not break through to the back. The Sweet Caporal advertising reverse is clean and boldly printed. The back of this card is of special note as a "150 Series" Factory 649 overprint on which the "Factory 30" line, which was intended to be covered up by the bold red overprint, remains visible. A T206 card with two factory numbers visible on the reverse is unusual and of special interest to collectors of T206 backs and printing anomalies. The back is clean and boldly printed. This is an exceptional card which presents far better than suggested by its technically accurate assigned grade, and would be a worthy addition to any T206, Walter Johnson, or classic Hall of Fame card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,659
