1934 Babe Ruth Signed Bat - 1st Prize in a Contest! Original Family Provenance!

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $23,700

Babe Ruth store-model bat ("40 BR") signed by Babe Ruth in black fountain pen (grading "7/8") on the sweet spot of the barrel. Ruth, as was his custom when presented with a bat to sign, has lightly sanded a portion of the barrel to provided both a smoother and lighter surface for the placement of his autograph. Ideally, this bat comes with a unique and outstanding provenance. In 1934 our consignor's father was lucky enough to win first prize in a baseball contest (although the details have been lost over time, our consignor believes it had something to do with correctly picking the starting lineups of the 1934 All-Star Game). That prize included not only an all-expense-paid trip to the 1934 World Series (which he attended with his uncle at the time), but also a Babe Ruth signed bat, which is the bat offered here (a letter of provenance from the consignor accompanies the bat). It should be noted that the manufacturer's stampings conform to the circa 1934 time period and feature the lettering "Trade Mark Reg U.S. Pat. Off." underneath the center brand along with the word "Powerized" to the right of the center brand. (H&B began phasing out the words "Trade Mark Reg U.S. Pat. Off." and replacing it with "Trade Mark Reg." around 1934 and 1935.) The significance of the dating, of course, is the fact that this bat was signed during Ruth's active playing career, right after he had finished his final season with the New York Yankees. As one might expect, the bat has been a treasured heirloom in our consignor's family since the day it was obtained and its condition reflects its careful storage over the past eighty years. The 34-inch bat ("34" stamped in the knob) has never been used and aside from a tiny indentation on the back of the barrel remains in spectacular Near Mint to Mint condition, displaying all of its beautiful, original finish. Babe Ruth autographed bats represent the rarest of all Ruth-signed items in the hobby today and the limited supply has always made them among the most sought-after pieces in the hobby. This particular bat, given its condition and ideal provenance, is certainly one of the finest examples we have ever seen, and the fact that it is entirely new to hobby justs adds to its appeal. Extraordinary in all respects. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $23,700
