1933 R5 Wischmann's Gum "Aeroplane Series" Near-Complete Set (19/25) Plus Only Known Unopened Pack

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,666

Presented is a near-complete set of R5 Wischmann’s Gum "Aeroplane Series." Included are nineteen of the twenty-five cards comprising a complete set as well as the only known unopened pack in existence. Issued by Wischmann’s Gum in the early 1930s with Picture Pack Gum, the set features colorful illustrations of airplanes and other flying vehicles, such as blimps, zeppelins, and hot-air balloons, along with a brief description of the depicted vehicle and advertising for the company and its product on the reverse. Notable aviation figures such as Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh are included in this set. Each card lists "a contemplated series of 250 different kinds" but to date only twenty-five cards have been documented. The cards were distributed in a thin pack, measuring 3-7/8 by 1-9/16 inches, which is comprised of an interior and exterior paper wrapper that forms a shell for the enclosed gum and card. Within the hobby, a small number of wrappers, which advertise "Wischmann's Picture Pack Penny Gum," are known to exist, but only one complete pack (offered here) has ever been documented. The pack is in Very Good condition with bold red text printed on front and back, light soiling from age, and an inch-long tear on the exterior paper wrapper. The cards range in grade from Vg to Ex with six lesser. One card, Refueling Record, has been graded VG 40 by SGC. Three duplicates are also included (Byrd, Edgar Dittmar, and Graf Zeppelin). Missing the following cards for completion: Akron, Dornier I, French Plane, Sopwith Dolphin, C. Kingsford Smith, and Wright Brothers. This is a very attractive collection of this 1930s gum-card nonsport set along with a very exciting and potentially unique complete unopened pack, which would make a tremendous addition to even the most advanced nonsport or pack collection. Total: 23 items (22 cards and 1 pack). Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,666
