1991 Pro Line Portrait Set - Extremely Rare Unsigned Set with Embossed Cert Stamps

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $237

Complete set of 308 1991 Pro Line Portraits trading cards, including the eight cards featuring players' wives. This is a very unusual set that was not issued to the public in the offered form. When this set was issued in 1991 by NFL Properties, the company decided to include randomly inserted autographed cards (approximately one per wax box) to help foster greater interest among collectors. For each autographed card, NFL Properties placed a special embossed stamp on the reverse to certify the authenticity of the respective autograph. That embossed stamp was only found on the autographed cards. What makes the offered set so unusual is that despite the fact that each card is not signed, all have the special embossed certification stamp on the reverse. These cards were not issued to the public (or ever intended to be issued to the public) in this manner. (The special certified-as-authentically signed cards were printed first, then signed; of course they were never intended to be released with the certification on cards that were not yet signed.) This is the first such unsigned complete set we have ever seen where each card bears the embossed certification stamp on the reverse. It is our understanding (from our consignor who acquired this set in the year of issue) that only approximately ten sets of this style exist and were provided as gifts to executives at Pro-Line, thus accounting for the existence of this unusual and rare variation set. While we have no way to verify the accuracy of this story (relayed to our consignor in 1991), it is certain that these cards were not issued in this manner, and that there is no doubt they originated from someone at the company. Near Mint condition overall. Total: 308 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $237
