1945 Walter Johnson Signed Check

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,777.50

Bank check, dated September 29, 1945, signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson. The check, drawn on The Germantown Bank of Germantown, Maryland, is made out to “Bank of Bethesda" in the amount of $20.00 and is signed “Walter Johnson” in black fountain pen (grading “9/10”). It wasn’t until the past ten years that the Johnson family finally released Walter Johnson checks. Prior to that, Walter Johnson checks were virtually nonexistent in the collecting world. In total, approximately 300 checks survived and have been sold by the Johnson family. While that number may sound like a lot, it is actually a very modest number compared with the quantities of Ruth and Cobb checks that the market has absorbed. The offered check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps (none touching upon the signature), a paper clip impression in the upper left corner, and a small bank spindle hole in the center (a very common characteristic of a canceled bank check). In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500++. SOLD FOR $1,777.50
