Jimmie Foxx Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,540.50

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed in blue ink on a side panel by Hall of Fame slugger Jimmie Foxx. The signature is exceptionally bold, grading "10" and fills the entire panel. This ball was examined by James Spence Authentication utilizing a video spectral comparator, which allows for the observation of latent writing and/or markings. That examination confirmed (as represented by our consignor) that this was once a multi-signed ball that has been professionally painted over, leaving only the Foxx signature on the sweet spot. The ball has a tan hue, with the paint having also obscured much of the manufacturer's label. None of the other signatures are visible with the naked eye. The professional removal or covering of signatures on baseballs has become a cottage industry in recent times, carried out by only a few skilled practitioners. While many purists deride such practices, there are also collectors who welcome the service. Single-signed balls did not become the ideal for autograph collectors until the late 1980s/early 1990s. As a result, acquiring single-signed balls for many of the early Hall of Famers is quite difficult for the average collector due to their rarity and exorbitant prices. Examples such as this, while not "single signed" in the literal sense, offer the same aesthetic appeal and provide a more economical alternative to a true single-signed ball for many collectors. (A true Foxx "single" in high grade last sold at REA in 2011 [Lot #1064], selling for $26,438.) Without regard to the paint, the ball remains in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,540.50
