Cy Young Single-Signed Ball - Rare Sweet-Spot Signature!

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $13,035.00

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young, baseball's all-time win leader. Young has boldly scripted his name in blue ink across the sweet spot, with the signature grading "8/9." This is the finest Cy Young single-signed ball we have ever offered. While the signature itself is certainly high-grade and far better than is usually found on most other examples, it is the placement on the sweet spot that truly distinguishes this ball from nearly all other Young singles in the hobby today. Because single-signed balls were not yet the preference for autograph collectors during Young's lifetime, he was seldom presented balls to sign. However, on those rare occasions when he received such a request, he almost invariably chose a side panel to write his name. Single-signed balls featuring Young's signature on the sweet spot (which is the ideal for any single-signed ball collector) are exceedingly rare. In fact, we can only recall having seen one or two others at auction in the past ten years. While we will never know the circumstances that caused Young to change his habit with this ball, it has resulted in what can only be described as one of the most desirable single-signed rarities in the hobby today. In addition to his prodigious win total, which will never be broken, Young is also the first pitcher of the modern era to record a perfect game (1904). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937. This ball dates from the 1954-1958 manufacturing period; therefore it was signed by Young sometime during the last two years of his life (Young died in 1955). The ball displays moderate surface wear, including an area of light discoloration on the ball label, and the manufacturer's stampings are light, but legible. In Very Good condition overall. This is a remarkable Cy Young signed ball and one that would serve as a centerpiece in any advanced Hall of Fame single-signed ball collection. Full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $13,035.00
