1939 Ty Cobb Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $7,110.00

Goldsmith "Official 97 League" ball signed in black fountain pen (grading "6/7") on the sweet spot by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. Ideally, Cobb has also included the date below his signature: "6/26/39." Early single-signed Cobb balls such as this are very much the exception rather than the rule and have always been highly prized by advanced collectors. (Most Cobb single-signed balls date from very late in his life, from the early 1950s to 1961, the year of his passing.) This ball is equally impressive with regard to provenance. It has been in our consignor's family since the day it was signed and was originally obtained by our consignor's grandfather. While he does not know the exact details of its history, he relates that his grandfather, who worked for Chevrolet Motors, was good friends with Ty Cobb and he even has a few photos of his grandfather posing with Cobb. The ball is moderately toned, but all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $7,110.00
