1934 World Series Umpires Signed Ball with Bill Klem

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $592.50

Umpires have never been popular with fans, which is probably the reason why over the years they have been largely ignored by fans (except to yell at) and autograph collectors as well. As a result, the offered ball is an exceptionally rare souvenir dating from the 1934 World Series between the Tigers and Cardinals. This official American League (Harridge) ball is not signed by members of either club, but by the four umpires who worked the Series: Bill Klem, Harry Geisel, Beans Reardon, and Brick Owens. All of the signatures have been scripted in black fountain pen, with the signatures of Klem ("8"), Geisel ("8/9"), and Reardon ("6/7") occupying the same side panel. The signature of Owens ("4/5") appears alone on an adjacent side panel. A third side panel bears the black fountain-pen notation "World Series/Umpires 1934." While all of the signatures are scarce, it is the signature of Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem that is particularly rare, especially on a baseball, and which truly distinguishes this piece as a significant relic from the 1934 fall classic. Klem is considered by many to be the greatest umpire who ever lived and his eighteen World Series assignments are a testament to his ability. In 1953 Klem and Thomas Connolly became the first umpires ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and today he remains one of only ten baseball arbitrators to receive that honor. The ball is lightly toned and all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible. In Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+ SOLD FOR $592.50
