1932 Cy Young Single-Signed Ball (Dated "August 18th, 1932"!)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,443.75

Official American League (Harridge) ball signed and dated by Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young in black fountain pen on a side panel. Young's first name is bolder than his last, with the signature grading "6/7" overall. The date, "Aug 18th 1932," which Young has written directly above his signature, remains clearly legible. This is one of the earliest Cy Young single-signed balls we have seen and dates prior to his election to the Hall of Fame in 1936. While not common by any means, the vast majority of Cy Young signed balls and other items in the hobby today date from the 1940s and early 1950s, when autograph collectors began focusing on Hall of Fame players. Young was a robust sixty-five years old in 1932 and the signature displayed here is much stronger than those dating from his later years, which are characterized by a slower, more deliberate (often shaky) style of penmanship. The ball is darkly toned, with a number of minor surface blemishes and abrasions. The manufacturer's stampings are very light, but remain mostly legible. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and full LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $4,000++. SOLD FOR $4,443.75
