Frank Chance Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $0

Tober "International League" ball signed by Hall of Fame first baseman Frank Chance, who made up one third of baseball's immortal double-play combination "Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance." The famed "Peerless Leader" has inscribed the ball in black fountain pen on a side panel: "From your Friend/Frank L. Chance." The inscription has partially faded and grades "3/4," but the signature is much bolder (grading "6/7") on account of the fact that it has been enhanced. That fact was revealed when James Spence Authentication examined the ball under a video spectral comparator, which allows for the observation of latent writing and/or markings. It is important to note that James Spence Authentication has deemed the Chance signature authentic, but it must be properly qualified with regard to the enhancement. Such enhancements were common back in the earlier days of collecting and were not done maliciously to deceive anyone, but strictly to preserve a signature that was fading. Obviously, without the enhancement, we imagine that Chance's signature would be comparable in strength to that of the inscription. We have seen countless examples of signature-enhanced balls over the years, both multi-signed and single signed, the vast majority of which date prior to 1950 (as one would expect). The fact that this ball features a Frank Chance signature, albeit enhanced, makes it an exceedingly rare piece. Frank Chance signatures are practically non existent because of his early death at the age of fifty-seven in 1924. Frank Chance's signature in any form is extremely rare. To find a Chance signature alone on a ball is virtually impossible. This is one of the holy grails for any Hall of Fame single-signed ball collector and we cannot imagine that the opportunity to obtain a Frank Chance single will arise again anytime in the near future. The ball displays only very light surface wear and all of the manufacturer's stampings remain legible. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $0
