1938 Babe Ruth Signed Check

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $3,555.00

Babe Ruth personal check, dated November 16, 1938, and signed "G. H. Ruth" along the bottom border. Ruth's signature has been scripted in blue fountain pen and grades "9." The check, drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, is made out to "U.S. Collector of Internal Revenue" in the amount of $00.53. Ruth's name is preprinted along the left margin. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, as well as two staple holes just below Ruth's preprinted signature on the left. One of the cancellation stamps just barely touches upon the top of the "H" and "R" in Ruth's signature. Matted and framed together with a recent print of Ruth (7 x 9 inches) to total dimensions of 14.5 x 20.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
