1925 Pittsburgh Pirates World Champions Team-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,147.50

Official National League (Heydler) ball signed in black fountain pen by the following twenty-five members of the 1925 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates: McKechnie (Mgr.), Traynor (sweet spot), Clarke (coach), Cuyler, Carey, Barnhart, Meadows, Grantham, Spencer, McInnis (sweet spot), Yde, Bigbee, Gooch, Bill McKechnie Jr., Morrison, Moore, Rawlings, Aldridge, Smith, Culloton, Sheehan, Adams, Ens, Wright, and Onslow (coach). Signatures range from "5" to "8," averaging "7." This is a remarkably complete Pirates team ball from the club's 1925 Championship season, featuring all nine starters and five future Hall of Famers, including Fred Clarke, who only served as a coach with the club for the 1925 season (he had a long tenure as the club's player/manager during the early 1900s, leading the team to four pennants and one World Championship). Team-signed balls dating from the 1920s are rare, especially those of Championship clubs. The offered example is no exception and represents only the second 1925 Pirates team-signed ball we have ever offered (the first, a spectacular high-grade example, appeared as Lot 822 in our May 2008 auction, where it sold for $11,750). The ball displays light surface wear and all of the manufacturer's labels remain clearly legible. In Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $4,147.50
