Joe Giard Signed (Endorsed) 1927 New York Yankees Payroll Check

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,036.25

This is, in our opinion, without question the single finest Joe Giard signed item in the collecting world. The New York Yankees payroll check, dated May 31, 1927, is issued to "Joe Giard" in the amount of "$312.24" and has been signed in black fountain pen along the base by team owner "Jacob Ruppert" (grading "10") and countersigned on the left border by general manager "E. G. Barrow" ("8"). Giard has endorsed the check "Joe Giard" on the reverse in black fountain pen ("10"). The typed notation on the reverse reads "Balance of salary up to and including May 31, 1927 as per statement attached." Joe Giard’s Major League pitching career only lasted three seasons and he finished with a lifetime 13-15 record and 5.96 ERA. Despite those less-than-impressive accomplishments, his signature is extremely highly prized by collectors due to the fact that Girard is the most elusive of all 1927 Yankees signatures and the key rarity in completing a set of 1927 New York Yankees signatures. Giard only played with the Yankees in 1927, which was his final season in the Majors. In sixteen games with the club, he pitched a total of twenty-seven innings and finished the year with no decisions and an 8.00 ERA. Giard passed away in 1956 at the age of fifty-eight. The rarity of Giard's signature cannot be overstated. Aside from a small number of 1927 New York Yankees team-signed balls, this is only the third Giard signature example we have ever offered. The fact that his signature appears here on a New York Yankees payroll check, which basically removes all authenticity concerns, makes this what we believe to be the ultimate Joe Giard signed item. Amazingly, our consignor purchased this check along with a John Grabowski endorsed 1927 New York Yankees payroll check (which appears as a separate lot in this auction) at a small country auction house located in Northhampton, Massachusetts. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Northampton is only twenty-five miles from Ware, Massachusetts, where both Giard and Grabowski were born. Obviously, this is the only Joe Giard 1927 New York Yankees payroll check we have ever seen, and it will probably be the last. The check (9 x 3.25 inches), which has normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, displays two light vertical folds, a staple hole in the upper left corner, and three tiny areas of age toning. It should be noted that one of the folds and a few of the cancellation holes touch upon the Giard signature. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,036.25
