1933 R319 Goudey #188 Rogers Hornsby PSA NM-MT 8

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,014.50

For more information about the assembly and the condition of the PSA-graded complete 1933 Goudey set that is consigned to this auction (of which this is a part) and which has been broken down into 110 smaller lots, please visit this link which provides the introduction to the set that appears in the printed catalog:

Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Of the 440 examples of 1933 Goudey #188 Rogers Hornsby graded by PSA to date, only twenty-one have graded at this level, and only four have ever been graded higher. Regarded by many as the greatest right-handed hitter of all time, Hornsby took special care of his batting eyes, refusing to read newspapers or watch movies. He won seven batting titles and retired with the second-highest batting average in baseball history (.358). As a player/manager he won two pennants and a World Series title with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1926, that team's first championship. Deep, rich colors, clean off-white borders, and centered slightly to the right. The image is minimally out of register in some areas, mentioned only for the sake of accuracy as it does not detract from the appearance of the card. Crisp and clean, both front and back. A very attractive, extremely high-grade PSA example that would be a significant addition to virtually any 1933 Goudey PSA Registry set or Hall of Fame collection. SMR is $3,300. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $2,014.50
