1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats Baltimore BBC Team Card

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $21,330.00

Graded GOOD+ 35 by SGC. 1887 Kalamazoo Bats team card of the Baltimore Orioles of the American Association issued by Chas. Gross & Co. All N693 team cards are extremely rare. Only six different teams are known to exist. No new teams have been discovered since the 1960s so the set appears to be complete at six. This is a very attractive example with an Excellent appearance from the front. The card displays an extremely strong photograph with ideal contrast and perfect focus and is centered slightly to the right. A faint wrinkle is visible in the lower left corner with the remaining three corners showing minor traces of wear. The card has been harshly downgraded due to a thin line (possibly glue residue) on the reverse, a couple of extremely minor spots of abrasion, and a very light 1.5 inch crease that does not break through to the front, all of which are extremely minor. The blank reverse is otherwise crisp and clean. (In the "old days" when this card was purchased, it was described as Near Mint to Mint! While modern grading standards understandably strive to take into account all flaws, we can't help but think the great merits of this card are not fully communicated by its modest modern-day technical grade.) We have found Baltimore to be a very rare team in the N693 Kalamazoo Bats set. This is a tremendous example of this desirable nineteenth-century rarity. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $21,330.00
