1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug John Ward

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $948.00

Beautiful N300 Mayo's Cut Plug example of Hall of Famer John Ward. This is one of John Ward's most striking cards. Extremely attractive in all respects, with a bold portrait, no creases, and almost imperceptible touches of wear to the edges and corners, which are almost always very visible on Mayo's due to their condition-sensitive flush-to-the-border design. This card most definitely has an approximately Near Mint appearance. However, it has been graded and encapsulated as Authentic by SGC due to a very slight, almost imperceptible, trim on at least two edges. It is expertly executed and could easily be missed by the untrained eye. Still, this is a tremendously attractive example that is extremely strong in every other area with reference to condition (slight wear to reverse). Ward is an especially fascinating subject in the Mayo's Cut Plug set because his card was issued two ways: one listing him as "John Ward: 2nd. B." and the other identifying him as "John Ward: Retired." This is the first card of Ward issued, listing him as "John Ward: 2nd. B.," prior to his formal status as retired, and is therefore also his final card issued as a player. This is a spectacular "Authentic" example with Near Mint appearance of one of the most majestic of all nineteenth-century cards, and one of John Ward's most classic cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
