1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats Athletic BBC Team Card

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $9,480.00

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Tied for the highest-graded example on the combined population reports of PSA and SGC. 1887 Kalamazoo Bats team card of the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association issued by Chas. Gross & Co. All Kalamazoo Bats team cards are extremely rare. This team is highlighted by Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson and Harry Stovey, a major star of the day who many believe deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, both of whom are standing in the back row center. The offered example displays an extremely strong photograph with ideal contrast and perfect focus. This card has an Excellent appearance with just a hint of light wear at the corners. It has been downgraded by SGC due to a small area of erased writing and a couple of small tobacco stains, both on the blank reverse. Minor reverse flaws "come with the territory" with nineteenth-century cards, and most collectors focus on overall appearance and the photographic quality of the image. This example is extremely strong in appearance and, as can easily be seen, presents an outstanding high-quality image. The Athletics is a particularly interesting card in the series as most of the Kalamazoo Bats individual player cards, of course, feature Philadelphia players. The players on this team card were also each honored with an individual Kalamazoo Bats card. Only six different teams are known to exist. No new teams have been discovered since the 1960s so the set appears to be complete at six. This is an extremely strong example of this nineteenth-century tobacco-card rarity. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,480.00
